Archive posts.

Post by Tim »

I reached out to IT. Repairing the old archive posts will cost another $200.00, so they show again. As our regulars know, this site costs a lot to keep current. There is so much good data in those old posts I hate they are not showing. I'm considering the cost, just reaching out to our regulars as if they think those posts are worth getting back in general.

As a newbie here not knowing what's in there I can't speak to the justification and if you do choose that direction, count me in for a $50 support payment towards that.

..... and maybe the old posts will answer some of the basic questions I'm asking saving y'all experts' time for the really esoteric interesting stuff.

I think there is a lot of excellent post from as far back as 97. Mitch and Chick are among many who have moved to the great AC shop in the sky.

Thanks for the offer.

Considering it, John.

Not to beat a dead horse. Keeping this free site up and running has been a financial obligation lately. It would be nice to find a way to have a one-time new user fee of 2.00 dollars. I have not found a way to make that in the registration process. I'm sure that would reduce traffic as well. Becasue everyone wants free stuff. :)

Wow that's a tough one..... fwiw, as a new user, even one experienced in automotive and forums and one that has contributed after validation, I would have been hesitant to pay even a small fee to start a post which may or may not get any results.

Forums have different vibes which one does not know until they're in it to see if they're compatible.

For instance before I found you guys I found another auto AC forum and I think my post there has yet to get a response.

Seems to model that tends to work is asking for support from users which are seeing benefit..... I don't know maybe start charging on the sixth post? (Not advocating that)

Whatever you do it'll affect how the forum looks, that feeling it has, and how it works.... and it is your forum so you get to structure it however you like.

.... Farming out IT (be it from not having computer skills or not wanting to take the time) of a specialized forum is unlikely to have a financial reward. Usually it's a work of love.

The phpBB platform you are on is very common and has a strong support community of instructions and ask questions of. It is the one I used years ago running our club forum which I IT'd myself as a person not in the IT profession.

I wouldn't think I'm a person for this since you don't know me well yet and I seem to have a different approach to some things than others on here, and if you'd like to see if I can help directly on the IT side, get in touch and I'll see what I can do.

In any case it would be really great to have all the past knowledge which seems to be in the old forum.

Suppose I wanted to spend time constantly doing the tech work related to the forum. I probably could figure it out. Many things are happening, and the forum is way down on my essential task list.

I provide it for others, not for self-gain. Many of our issues are related to a mandated server upgrade. It has caused many problems, and it is the standard game of developer vs. host finger-pointing.

Sweet!.... If he has any extra bandwidth a small annoyance is that when I submit a post it comes up as invalid form submission and I have to submit it a second time for it to go through.... This happens both on Chrome and on Android.... The effect of that is that if I don't wait to confirm that it posted the submission is not posted every the time

That is just an error I don't care to worry about. Again, Andrew, I don't spend hours trying to make it perfect for everyone at this point. I have so many other things going on.
