Re: 1998 Frontier (288K miles)
Today I replaced both of the O-rings on the high pressure/discharge line with brand-new green HNBR O-rings I already had. I pulled good vacuum, and added 2 cans of R134a. So we'll wait and see.
First I had to do a "fix" on the vacuum pump given to me by Armour Foods when they relocated from Arizona to Nebraska in 1989 (they said it smoked some, I never observed that); the electric motor would spin but the pump part would not turn with the belt. So I whacked it with a hammer to free it up. In the 7 years since I last used this pump, all the oil had leaked out too, so I had to add fresh oil, and it did work well. I think this vacuum pump was given to me to thank me for taking Food Scientist Mrs. Cusser off their hands.

My "newer", smaller vacuum pump, given to me when our instrument supplier updated our gas chromatography-mass spectrometer, had connection for R-12 so I didn't feel like messing with it.

By the way, at least in Arizona, O'Reilly and Autozone have loaner vacuum pumps, and those have fittings for both R134a and R-12. If one has a 2017/newer vehicle that takes quite expensive 1234yf (1234 you're f**ked) refrigerant, all I can say is GOOD LUCK !!!
