Does Leak Detection Dye Work?

I have searched for many ways to detect A/C leaks, one of which is by using fluorescent oil dye. But there are two types of dye: powder and solution. Which one will not damage my car system? Does the dye work?

Yes, UV dye - used in low light and with appropriate yellow goggles - DOES work to find leaks. I've only used liquid UV dye or purchased correct refrigeration oil already containing UV dye and used that when installing a new AC compressor. But UV dye is just one tool in the arsenal to find leaks; for an evaporator leak (out of sight in the dash), one typically looks for UV dye in the condensate drain. Many vehicles come from factory with UV dye already in the system.

I've also used electronic "sniffer", soap bubbles, and visual examination to find leaks.

Consult vehicle manufacturer before adding dye. Ford for example, came with dye since 1995 and have issue technical service bulletins ( TSBs ) on the issue and highlights adding dye reduces the lubricity of the compressor oil leading to premature compressor failure.
This statement by me can be verified thru the TBSs available thru Ford OR if any of you use Mitchel Pro.

It helps if you have a UV flashlight and turn the lights off in the shop (or just wait until dark), to look for leaks. They'll show up all right.

But if something in your A/C has really opened up and hosed down the whole engine compartment, the dye won't tell you much except that there is a big mess that you can only see with a UV flashlight.

(UV flashlight is also useful if you have a tom-cat who likes to spray in the house, though)

I've never been a fan of dye. Just get a good electronic leak detector. No waiting around for some dye to show up. Big Blu was good for hoses and connections. Rich man's soap and water.
