The probe has to be directly placed against your suction line. The hose clamp is fine, it's just to hold the sensing bulb in place. Then wrap with prestite tape. Tape is just to cover the bulb from warm/hot air messing with sensing bulb sensing.

Combination of both. The cap not going to seal without a valve core. Valve cores tend to leak some.

Are you inserting the OT into the liquid line side of the condenser, expect it to stop? I don't have a condenser in front of me. But again, cond mount OT. The white end towards evap on the cond mount. Opposite of evap mount where the white end is pointing away from evap.
