Re: AC HOSES
It is a GM compressor. There is wide range of manifold blocks that would offer a better hose routing than that OEM manifold you are trying to bend.

Re: AC HOSES
Your 1988 XJS should have a brass expansion valve mounted at the evaporator. Later cars have the block type expansion valve. This can lead to some confusion. If we start with the suction line to the compressor, it starts at the Evaporator. Usually a 5/8" ID or larger line, it goes straight to t...

Re: Where is a micron gauge placed when vacuuming system?
I usually mount a gauge like that at the vacuum hose connection on the manifold. That way I can start by checking the hoses and manifold for leaks before I connect to the system. As well as checking the vacuum pump itself. Valves shut, manifold and valves are under test. Note the maximum vacuum your...

Have to pressure check it anyway.
Pump it down and pressurize it with dry nitrogen to 150 psi. Check it in a few days. If it holds, you can drive it around like that (with the compressor unplugged) indefinitely.

Re: Compressor life
With simple systems like yours, in the summer I leave the compressor on and control cabin temperature with fan speed. The frost protection device may cycle the clutch, or it may not. Because of the constant cloud of marijuana smoke in traffic here in Las Vegas I keep the recirculate mode on all of t...

Re: Compressor life
Many of the carbon / ceramic seals in compressors over the years have been declared "bad" and replaced when they were just fine. The oil film on the seal IS the seal. Tecumseh and A6 seals needed to run to keep the oil film in place. Running your compressor once a month or week should be e...

Re: I need help with the correct amount of oil
Unless your components are significantly larger than the OEM parts, the factory spec should be fine.
If you had ADDED 2 meters of #10 hose, a little more oil might be recommended.
Anyplace between 5 and 5.7 ounces of oil will be fine.

So the mystery vehicle is just a 1990 Civic?
Yeah, put 5 ounces total in it and go with that.

Re: I need help with the correct amount of oil
Is that 2 meters of each hose size? If you took 4 ounces of oil out of the new knockoff 508, it still needs 5 ounces to start with. A 1990 Civic used 5 ounces for the entire tiny system. Some oil coats the inside surfaces of the system. So, knowing the size of the system helps with the oil estimate....
