Can't find leak on R134 conversion - tried UV and Sniffer
I replaced the condensor, compressor, receiver, expansion valve and some (not all) lines on my '89 BMW 325i as part of a R134a conversion. It cools well when charged but looses a charge relatively quickly - within a day or so. I have tried UV dye and a "sniffer" but have failed to locate t...

Finding leak in r134 conversion - tried UV... sniffer next?
Hello all I replaced most components in my 89 BM 325i except the evaporator and a handful of the lines. I replaced all the o-rings. The system leaks pressure relatively rapidly (a day or so) but does cool after a charge. I have UV dye in the system but its not been helpful as I have some UV 'stains'...

Re: Charge by weight or pressure? Seeing hi pressure with a lot LESS than recommended R134 oz
It's been 65-95% humid in the mid to high 80's here, then it broke to 70's and 45% rh. When it did I found the low pressure switch cut out and the AC wouldn't run! I suppose this makes sense - I charged with far less weight that I predicted I would need and did so in hot/humid conditions. I added th...

Re: Charge by weight or pressure? Seeing hi pressure with a lot LESS than recommended R134 oz
Thanks for your help. I see the relationship that the graph implies but I wonder if you could be a bit more explicit about what I should see as far as pressures are concerned? Do I want to see little to no drop on the low side when I rev to 2000? Or am I expecting to see a drop (and if so about how ...

Re: Charge by weight or pressure? Seeing hi pressure with a lot LESS than recommended R134 oz
I just repeated this test at 86deg f / 65% RH
I'm not seeing that great a difference between hi side pressure at idle and 2000 rpm.
Idle:
40psi low
200psi hi
2000rpm
20-25 psi low
200psi hi

Re: Charge by weight or pressure? Seeing hi pressure with a lot LESS than recommended R134 oz
Thanks this description is much appreciated. I will try adding small amounts of refrigerant as you suggest and take a closer look at the sight glass. What would be suggested to you by seeing a slight to modest decline to the low side pressure when I go from idle (which is low, maybe 750rpm) to ~1500...

Thanks for elaborating. I was unsure what the bulb/disc on the exterior of the block style TXV does ( top side of attached pic) so I did insulate it with cork tape. It lives inside the evap box.

Re: Charge by weight or pressure? Seeing hi pressure with a lot LESS than recommended R134 oz
Hello - I replaced the receiver, pressure switch, exp valve, condenser (parallel flow) and compressor (reman nippondenso 10P) and some of the lines, flushed the others. The reman comp came with 3oz PAG46 and the mfgr told me to add 3.75oz elsewhere so I did so to the receiver and one of the lines. I...

Charge by weight or pressure? Seeing hi pressure with a lot LESS than recommended R134 oz
I did a complete R134a conversion on my 89 BMW and saw recommendations for approx 32oz of R134a. The system was fully vacuumed then I put two 12oz cans in, and I know you never get all of the refridgerant, so it has less than 24oz in there. Yet I see consistent 100psi hi/lo static, 50/225 lo/hi at i...

Re: BMW E30 R134a conversion looks normal static/idle but hi-side goes HIGH over idle
Thanks very much - this gives me a lot to work off. I will get the condenser fan working before I run the system again. Regarding the "sensing bulb" I was not talking about the temperature sensor that I believe feeds into the compressor on/off circuit, I was talking about the actual expans...
