Re: 53 Packard Patrician factory AC

Yeah that thing is a chinese frankenstein from a 24v chinese excavator. We are not even sure it is variable displacement.

I gave you the link to a real V7 in my last post.

Belt tension can be accomplished in a few ways. A solid cast iron mount may already have much of what is needed.

Re: 53 Packard Patrician factory AC

Compressor refrigeration capacity is the best way to size one. Most manufacturers provide a dyno sheet that indicates the cooling capacity in kilowatts.

Converting Kw to btu/H may give you an idea of the scale. 12 kilowatts = 40,945 Bth/h or 3.4 tons of refrigeration.

The important part of the ...

Re: 53 Packard Patrician factory AC

You only need a single V belt. Many A6 compressors were single groove on some very large cars.

There are ear mount V7 compressors, but to get one with a V belt you need to swap the clutch from a V5.

The site sponsor can probably help you with the hybrid V7 compressor.

Re: 53 Packard Patrician factory AC

The TXV regulates flow in to the evaporator coil to attempt to keep it from freezing. If you reduce airflow over the coil, the TXV reduces refrigerant flow based on temperature feedback.

The GM A6 type system had two controls on the evaporator. A TXV at the inlet, and a POA valve on the suction ...

Re: 53 Packard Patrician factory AC

I have been busy with other things, but I did not forget this thread.

That is a mighty evaporator you have there. Looks to have been built for a significant mass flow.

The TXV is of course the big question mark. If it does not work, replacements will be a little complicated. It appears to have an ...

Tbird:

I have a 3208 CAT project in the shop right now with the same problem. 5.2 inch pulley and that diesel is on the governor @2800. Idle is 550. "Poor cooling" LOL A vintage C cab, and the fan is mounted on the end of the crank just to make it more fun.

Yes a pic of the TXV if you need ...

Re: 53 Packard Patrician factory AC

Well, the engine matters. We can get two pages into a system like this and find out it is an LS swap. Wasted time. BTDT

Engine speed range and drive sizes matter. If you don't have enough compressor volume the system will be awful.

The TXV could have virtually any refrigerant gas in it. All you ...

Re: 53 Packard Patrician factory AC

Looks like most of what you are keeping is the OEM evaporator and air handling.

Let's start with the obvious question. Is the Original Straight 8 engine in the car?

Is the car converted to 12v?

Lots of things affect the finished product with a project like this.

The Cadillac of that era used a ...

Re: Newbie, installing "custom" system

The compressor discharge hose is a great place for extra oil. It spreads through the system with the refrigerant.

I prefer to put switches like that in the dryer if you have a port available. The compressor discharge is pretty hot, and while the switch is designed for underhood service why run it ...

Re: Testing Micron gauges

We calibrate brand new tools all the time. I have had to send out brand new Fluke meters for Calibration stickers before I could use one.

If you have enough cash to buy $1500 worth of gauges, pick one you like and send it out.

Or is this experiment going to produce 8, "open box" used returns that ...
