Re: Resurrecting 1970 GM AC with POA

Earlier this month I took the Nova to work. http://cjnn.xtremefabricator.com/images/LY6swap/ly6swap1485.jpg There's something magical about the reverberation of a V8 idling into a parking structure. It brought back memories from taking this car to my high school prom and setting off all the fast &am...

Re: Resurrecting 1970 GM AC with POA

I didn't snap photos of the wiring but I got that done last week. I was faithful to the wiring diagram in my previous post. To test, I bypassed the safety switch and confirmed the clutch and high speed fan were triggered when the AC was turned on. Everything was working properly so I headed to a bud...

Re: How to charge custom system

I came across another version of the charging-by-increments and monitoring pressure. It was embedded in this thread and here is a quote: You can add small amounts of refrigerant while looking at the pressures to sneak up on a full charge with a TXV system like that. On a custom system where the char...

Re: Resurrecting 1970 GM AC with POA

Evacuate the system and put a little refrigerant in the system. You do not want the system to be at negative pressure. I don't understand your comment. Right now the system was just freshly assembled. I haven't drawn a vacuum on it yet, so it shouldn't be at negative pressure. As soon as I have the...

Re: How to charge custom system

This thread has some interesting information: https://www.autoacforum.com/messageview.cfm?catid=2&threadid=11759 1) It describes how an OE might set the charge amount using high ambient conditions in a wind tunnel and adding charge until they reach the desired subcooling in the condenser 2) It d...

How to charge custom system

I have pieced together a custom system consisting of a 1970 evaporator TXV and POA (adjusted for r134a) with a newer compressor, parallel flow condenser, aftermarker drier, and custom hoses. I can not seem to find a thread or online post on how to determine an appropriate charge amount for a custom ...

Re: Resurrecting 1970 GM AC with POA

I managed to wrap the TXV sensing bulb with a layer of insulation tape (aka cork tape or prestite tape). The insulation prevents the TXV from responding to engine bay and fan-wash temperatures. http://cjnn.xtremefabricator.com/images/LY6swap/ly6swap1476.jpg http://cjnn.xtremefabricator.com/images/LY...

Re: Resurrecting 1970 GM AC with POA

Thank you Dougflas. Yes my 1970 factory AC system did call for 11oz of mineral oil. The OE application for the compressor (2007+ Silverado) I'm using calls for 8oz of PAG46. Since this is a hybrid system, I'm not sure how much to use. Here are some considerations: Evaporator - OE 1970 unsure dimensi...

Re: Resurrecting 1970 GM AC with POA

I decided to get back to work on the AC project. Here is my to do list: - Adjust POA valve - Flush evaporator and POA valve - Install o-rings throughout - Install hi pressure switch - Add PAG oil - Wire compressor and fan relay - Install compressor belt - Evacuate and charge Starting with the POA va...

Re: Resurrecting 1970 GM AC with POA

Hose Crimping This weekend I borrowed a Mastercool 71550 AC hose crimper and made all the hoses for the system. Here's what a typical fitting looks like coming out of the tool: http://cjnn.xtremefabricator.com/images/LY6swap/ly6swap1438.jpg This tool is very simple to operate. It comes with dies fo...
