Refrigerant scale calibration.

mihai914 on Sat May 08, 2004 2:27 PM User is offline

Hello.

Just purchased a used Robinair #34985 manual refrigerant scale. It works and seems in good condition, should I still consider getting it calibrated. Can it be calibrated and can I do it myself? Thanks

I forgot the exact number but its like 25 pennies equal an ounce. Scale its self should be adjustable. Maybe someone else will chime in with an option. If not I can check Monday using are postal scale at the office.

The official way for these is to get a calibrated 50lb weight, zero the scale, then adjust it with a calibrated 50lb weight. This is obviously a pain, so I just use a smaller calibrated weight like 10kg. They very rarely go out of calibration, at least not by any more than a few gramms at 10kg. They generally either work acurately, or the display read something stupid like 176lb, or the display goes up and down like a yoyo.

Tim, it's summer time now you can quit weighing your pennies and start weighing your dollars, Now how many dollars equal a pound? I let you know if i ever get that many.

Having a set of NBS test weights is nice for calibrating scales, not cheap to buy, and even less convenient to store. All scales have a certain degree of non-linearity so it's best to use the weight that most closely approximates the value you will be weighing so why not a half filled tank as the reference?

The next question is precisely how much does that tank weigh? That can be answered by either taking it to the meat market or post office that should have calibrated scales and weighing it, most will do this if you tell them why. If you don't want to carry your tank with you, find something that weighs about the same, a tool box, even several bags of flour or sugar will suffice or can goods. I have a cylinder liner tool that weighs exactly 17.86 pounds for an example, and that is my test weight.

So do you use all brand new pennies or badly worn ones?

I think that pennies are not a good calibration choice, given that there are two possible weights. Older pennies are solid copper, newer (like post 1982 or something) are copper plated zinc. Get a sharp knife and dig in to see for yourself.

Oh Yeah, fuse amperage rating drops for the new pennies as well. ;^)

Maybe you could sell the site to Nick put him on a commission and he could count his dollars and watch his pennies disappear.

Commission, heck no one's paying me a commission! Nick has troubles with windows programs so if I sold the site he would have to find a support package. Well actually its cold fusion based but runs on a win 2003 server. Just pulling Nick's chain as I'm sure he would have no problems. So what's the first bid???????????????

Kind of noticed the rain here too, rained everyday from the end of May through now except we missed about three days so I could reseal my driveway and fertilize the lawn, must be a hole in the ozone layer letting the water leak through.

I don't have problems with Windows, it greats great, have a couple of computers that don't have any problems at all running Windows, but they are not connected to the net. Come to think about it, until five years ago when I was using Netscape with windows, no net net problems either, and never received any SPAM. So is the problem IE? Is it Windows? Or are their naughty people on the web?
