Electric vacuum cleaner hose, anyone see one.

The kind that powers a power head, just wonder if the conductors are somehow embedded in the hose when they manufacture it, or if they just run a wire within the hose.

I used to have a Kenmore vac with a power brush head. The wire was molded into the hose - spiraled with the plastic splines. Hose was always warm I suspect because of the power load.

I have a power head that I never used from a old Kenmore vacuum, does fit to my 30' long hose for my central Nutone. I like the Nutone because even if the bag does leak, blows everything to the outside. And while quite noisy in the basement, can barely hear it in the house. So I tried that power head with an extension cord, really works well and far better than any other vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush we have. So I am planning on taping a lamp cord to that long hose with a plug on it next to the vacuum outlets. Power head only draws a couple of amps, but that Nutone really sucks. Very light weight and easy to push, only about three inches tall for getting under tight spaces.

Nutone wants 600 bucks for their power head, see cheaper ones on the internet, but more than likely junk. Since I have all the stuff here, why not give it a try? Did think about running the cord through the hose, but may or may not cause blockage, so will just tape it to the outside.

Found a 1957 patent on it, where a hose like mine has only one coil spring in it, this patent runs two, bifilar wound spaced equally apart giving two conductors. Gather it gets warm as steel isn't the best conductor, but clever. Even adds a switch to control the power head.

Since the hose is constantly expanding and contracting, really no neat way to tape a wire to it, guess I will have to buy a hose. Just learned the place where my central vacuum was purchased went out of business six months ago, was right on Main street, only the sign is left.

Vacuumed my entire home rapidly, was effortless, but the dang cord kept on find stuff to get jammed to, would like to find this hose in bulk, have everything else I need.

I have 2 Orecks, and, with the exception of a Royal, have never found a vac that will out pull it. Like you, Nick, I have noticed that most vac shops have bitten the dust. There is one here in far south Dallas that has been around for years. The guy takes in vacs and refurbs them. He always has something new. He says that about 90% of all vac problems is because they are clogged with hair - never cleaned. He picked up a Dyson Ball for about $50 because the owner said it would not clean - it was just clogged.

Occurred to me after using this Nutone for 25 years, the only thing I have done was clean the bags. So before laying out a hundred bucks for a conductive hose, would take a look at it first.

Bearings needed cleaning and grease, commutators and brushes were in excellent shape, but a large O-ring between the vacuum motor and the case was cracked permitting air to get sucked in, so I just repaired that with silicone glue for a nice air tight seal. Seen some vacuums where the motor is in the dirt path, this one has a sealed can that sucks air in one hole and blows it out the other, the motor has it's own fan.

Was nice to work on something again Made in the USA. The guy that built my home was just starting out and put the best stuff in it, with six kids and a required move, had no choice but to buy a home rather than build one with my work requirements. He did put in the most powerful Nutone, claims a 2 HP motor and even the math works out. So I went ahead and ordered a 35' conductive hose, an Electrolux brand, Made in Canada, not the USA, but close. See what happens.

When are we going to start making stuff in the USA again, politicians were trying to make the USA a financial institution, that doesn't work as we are finding out the hard way. And so sick of this Chinese made crap. All I can do with it, is pitch it.

Nick I wish I had a central vacuum like you have let us know how the new hose works.

Finally got my carpal tunnel surgery done yesterday, got an arm block and a sedative to make my doctor happy so he wouldn't have to fool with a local. For that little cut in my hand, had about 7 people in the room with me, just in case something could wrong, nothing went wrong, but can type with one hand.

New hose came last night, but had tp play with anyway doped up and one free hand, works great and looks very repairable. Has five ohms oy total resistance so only dropping 10 volts for the power head.

Did get a new power head as well. when you insert the power head into the hose, makes the connection so no exposed cords. Can convert the vacuum outlets to a 120 vac type, but already have AC outlets next to eac vac outlet, so will just use those and the AC line cord option, not that bad to plug that in.
