I use high speed at work- even have a laptop with wireless card- that I use at various hot spots when traveling or going into town- But believe it or not- I am still on dial-up at home-- only because we are out of reach of any hard-wired internet, and satellite is too expensive- my neighbor has that- 1/2 mile down the road-- But I am very interested in my other neighbors system- he uses Clearwire- which is a cell phone technology - wireless- from a cell phone tower. (see clearwire.com ) They charge you by the speed you want- - you use a desktop directional device that you position toward the cell tower- to get maximum bars- (I had 4 of 5) when he brought his over. The only thing I don't like - is they want a 2 yr contract- which makes me hesitate- you can get it by the month- but at twice the price $36 vs about $79. My daughter now has her laptop- and drives to town 4 miles every day to get her internet fix-- I get mine at work- and only do bare necessities from home- (dial-up rememeber)... I am leaning toward a basic clear-wire system- along with a router so we can all access at the same time with our laptops- My daughter says she will stay at home and take collage classes online if I get the high speed- otherwise she wants to "go to school" and that means bigger bucks!! So what are your opinions?? should I succomb to wireless?
Also- Is it true I can keep my AOL e-mail address even if I dump AOL? One of my buddies at work says he still has it- and dumped AOL quite some time ago. I've had that e-mail address for 12 years- I know it shouldn't be the sole reason for hanging on- I have three other free e-mail addresses as well- just kind of like having a 6 character e-mail address- and they all match for each family member.. thanks

The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......

Sentry Insurance located in Stevens Point, WI just added high speed wireless to the entire town, free to their employees, but ten bucks a month for anyone else. Cable companies are screaming.
Did I ever tell you I hate cellular phone companies, what a rip-off with their two year contracts, question is, what is their cancellation fee. Wife tells me in Venezuela, the cell phone costs are about 1/5th of here. I feel that should also be true, come in with a couple of boxes, mount a tiny antenna on top of city hall and charge three times as much as a land line that does require a huge investment in running wires underground all over town plus constant maintenance problems.
Guess you have a trade off living in the sticks without cable access, but bet if you moved into town they won't let you bring your camels with you, does your phone company offer DLC? Keep on hearing about the new AT&T system sending full cable TV and internet, all high speed over conventional phone lines, have no idea how they are pulling that off. But claim event the smaller towns should have a choice with some competition. The way technology is changing, not easy to make a commitment.
I've had Clearwire since it came to Boise over 2 years ago. I seem to be getting slow downs at busy times of day that it didn't used to. I've got the cheapest service and am overall pleased for the price.

I was on dial up for years, never went to cable due to the price and aol pricing. Now I have cable internet, and get this, you not only can keep your old e-mail addresses by using AIM if you want, but you can get free aol (same as you have, same features and all) as long as you have a connection to the internet..You pay a lot for dial up aol, but you will have the same screen, same (7) screen names for the family, and as long as you are using an internet provider, you get aol free.. After you get the internet connection go into aol billing and change your pricing to "free" and thats all there is to it..Had free aol for the last five months....

Forgot to mention that, also have full access to AOL, but hardly ever use it.
T1 at the office and cable at home.

The $36/month plans sounds good for the wireless, but the contract is a big drawback.
If you haven't already, see if your phone company can provide DSL. I was surprised I could get it, only found out after a neighbor further down the road had it. We're at least 10 miles from the nearest town, still get a choice of speeds up to 1.5mbps.
Sounds like a "no-brainer" now... I technically don't pay for the AOL now-it was on my Mom's account-(now my brother's- Mom died last March)- I was one of the seven users on her account- even though we all live at different locations- really only 3 are active users. But sure is a pain when someone is already on the account- and can't be accessed by another user...
anyway--Chick- you mentioned that all you need is an internet access to maintain free AOL-- so- if I get Clearwire at my house and I change the AOL billing to free- does that mean my brother cannot access AOL anymore through dial-up at his (and Dad's) house-- and that he needs to get Clearwire or some form of internet access? He is only 2 miles away and is in the same situation as I am- he spends 90% of his time overseas (Fiji), but is home 1 month of year and lives on the internet when home. He currently "springs" for the AOL account- which basically gives it to me for free-- but it is dial-up.....So if he buys a Clearwire system for only 1 month a year- I could use it the other 11- they are portable-- but what to do during the 1 moth overlap?? or is there such a thing as two receivers on one account--which I doubt there is. Looks like I would need to pay my own and he pays his own-- or would AOL dial-up work for only 1 month of the year- even though it has been changed over to free billing??? hate to be a burden- but I seem to like to know what my options would be before I take the plunge.....thanks
BTW Dad has no interest in computers- and is currently paying for an extra phone line for the AOL- which I am trying to get things back in perspective and at least just use his seldom used single line--We really don't want an 81 year old retired farmer taking e-mails from women looking for older gents to marry dispose of their wealth--we have a neighbor and a cousin who are marrying foreign women whom they've met on the internet- soon after they were widowed-- we are talking inheritance here- it ain't gonna happen!!

Only the account holder can change the plan. So whoever's name it is in, once you have your internet access, they can change the billing to either free or a couple other plans. With "free" you don't get the 24/7 help and support...But who do you know that ever asked aol for help and support... You cannot have free aol if you use dialup though. So where ever the account is located must also have internet access other than dial up..
PS: Keep in mind, that once the person using the "master" screen name changes to free aol, with internet service, no one will be able to get on unless they have internet access... Meaning if they change it, they won't be able to dial up, if you use the master name and change it, they won't get on unless they have internet access, so you do need to coordinate it..

I think this is the home page for AOL, really never played with, least I have heard of it, but what is so special about AOL?
Do you really gotta have it?
That is the new home page for people that never had AOL, and are getting AIM..The actual AOL homepage is much cleaner, you can arrange your favorites and all those adds are simplified when you first sign on, then you close the window.. and have a nice clear blue background.. I don't know how to capture the screen shot, or I would, but no you don't have to have it, but when I first started on the computer, my son had it, gave me a screen name and I've been on it ever since. I have IE, comcast home, and a few others, and never use them since they are as confusing as the one you show.. It's just a matter of what you get used to, nothing more I guess...

Control key & PrtScn key captures the image. Then paste it in your image editor and create a jpg or gif file. Post it as an image pal.

Press both at the same time. Make sure f lock is off also. The open your editor and paste the image. You know what to do with images at that point.

Best program I have found for screen capture is IrfanView, but also have to download the plug-in's, "irfanview_plugins_397.exe", well at least you had to, see they have a new version now, 4.1, not sure about that, see I have version 3.97 where you had to download the additional plug-in's, but don't see that option for 4.1 unless they are including it now.
Have to set up a key to do a shot, can get the entire screen or the inside of a window, and specify where you want to save the shot, you already know how to size it in IrfanView,
here is a sample:
On 3.97, screen shot is under Options.
Nick:
Print Screen, open infanview, Ctrl+v screen capture shows on irfanview. Save however you like.

Seem to have lots of Photo programs on my computer besides Irfanview, Corel I like for resizing, changing the resolution, and doing some editing, but really have a talent for butchering a photo, the one that came with my Nikon camera for massive resizing and has the best red eye remover that I ever found, the one that came with my Canon for doing those stretch shots with a wide angle up to 360*, Nero has a bunch of stuff on it, as does Windows, Photoshop, thing I need a Ph.D. to use that one, plus the one that came with my Fuji.
Do I know how to use all the programs? No.

Here is a photo of my wife's Christmas town,
And one of our town:
This one, my hand froze to my camera:
Nick I have a load of those programs too.. And like you, I just can't use them..takes to long to figure them out. But I do like coral for cropping images, Irfanview for resizing and thats about it... when I need to do something, and don't know how, it seems Bohica comes up with the answer pretty quick... But I do have to write it down or I will forget in a day or two... Now where did I put that paper... BTW nice pics...
I took this one last sunday, it lost a lot of resolution since it wasn't close and I used Coral to make it bigger then crop it.. But photography is fun...
