Ignorant 4Runner needs help diagnosing problem

kurt franz on Tue June 19, 2012 1:49 PM User is offline

Year: 1994
Make: Toyota
Model: 4Runner
Engine Size: 3.0
Refrigerant Type: 134a
Country of Origin: United States

Here is my dilemma. I had the system topped off and it blew cold for about 2 days. After that it would intermittently blow some cold air, but never as cold as it should be. Some times it will not blow any cold air, some times it will blow "decently" cold air for 15 -20 minutes or so and then it quits working and blows warm air again.

I do notice that there is a low kind of roar noise coming from the engine compartment when it decides to quit working.

I am wondering if this is definitely a leak, or possibly another issue with an electrical switch or something.

Regardless, I am ignorant and would appreciate any advice or steering in the right direction. I assume that the first thing I need to do is check the low and hi side pressure. And not to add any stop leak or anything

Pressures - Visual inspection for leaks - Any oily areas should be checked with soap and water ( bubbles). Noise form compressor is not a good sign. Also check to see that the fan is locking up correctly. There are a few other things to check also. But those are some places to start.
