Reclaimed R-12 Freon

hw3tnt on Thu September 03, 2015 11:31 PM User is offline

Is the reclaimed R-12 Freon safe to use? If so where is the best place to buy it? Thanks HIII

Best to purchase virgin refrigerant. Most reclaimed refrigerant is reused in the shop by the mechanics. If looking to buy used refrigerant. Have them run a purity test showing the purity level of the refrigerant.

"Reclaimed" is the term to refer to possibly impure refrigerant that has just been removed from a system. This is usually put back into the same car after service is complete, or it can be sent to a factory for recycling. Technically it is not legal for a shop to sell reclaimed refrigerant to a consumer, though it can be put into another car owned by the same person as the car it was removed from.

R-12 found in tanks on the market is either virgin (made before the 1993 ban) or recycled. Recycled has been highly processed and tested to meet the same standards as virgin refrigerant.

Recycled is what I was talking about. I found a place that sells 30 lb for a little over $800 but I also found new R12 30 lb for about the same price. Thanks. HIII

You have enough R-12 vehicles to warrant buying 30 pounds of R-12? Like would you ever use that much? I saved enough cans to service mine, have just one R-12 truck left.

I have both 16oz cans and 30 lb drums of R12. all of them are virgin in quality. EPA card is needed.

I have the EPA card. How much for 16oz cans of R12, how much for the 30lb drum.

No I dont. I only have 1986 Chevy C-10 and 1985 Honda Accord. Both use R12 freon. Neither leak down, I just need to replace some old components before I have trouble.
