Global (GPD) and Universal Air (UAC)

Country of Origin: United States

I've been out of the AC game for a while. Back in my day common good parts were Visteon, Fridgette, etc.

Now I see either GPD or UAC being sold as the more OE/Pro brands vs infamous 4seizins etc.

I did some research and they both seem to be just Chinese importers.

Are these guys the same thing? I've seen people recommend UAC compressors...but it seems like generic chinese stuff to me.

Are these two decent?

The last compressor I got from AMA was a UAC. It looked just about like any other compressor and did not give me any problems after it was installed it has been about two weeks and I have not heard back from the customer, so I guess all is good. One thing about it that I did find odd was that the thermo protector/sensor had been eliminated on the new compressor, the wire just went right to the clutch. Here was not even a place cast into the compressor for it. I know not all compressors have them, this is just the first time where I have seen one that had been eliminated. The other thing I found interesting is on the label, it just said "new" and not a brand name.

I have not used any GPD parts, but they seem to be ok. As Tim told me on the phone last week, most of these cheap Chinese compressors are good, as long as the rest of the repair is done right (flush, oil, the amount of right refrigerant).

I bought a can of 134a at w**-mart that had a stop leak, oil, and dye in it. It also had a hose and a gauge, so now I'm an AC pro!

Yup, we can drop the "offshore" manufacturing moniker. It's just where the bulk of manufacturing is done today. Sad, but true. I would buy local in a bind; but if I have a heads up or planning a project, I am going to order from AMA.

There are a few good vendors in the industry. As Hecat mention the entire industry has gone china. To think you're going to buy American only anymore is not going too happen. Most of the quality vendors have good products. What you see on ebay and such may be old stock or stuff that did not clear inspections.
