Compressor goes under the hood & drives with a belt on that car.

Luggage goes in the trunk.

Yes I know but is it possible

Yes, absolutely it is possible. I have considered this myself, but I was not going to locate the compressor so far from the coils.

In my mind, either a lovejoy driven compressor, or a belt system with a high torque DC motor would work, and depending on under hood space, you'd be better off doing it there in my opinion.

However, the cost of DC motors capable of driving a compressor at a high enough speed is prohibitive. AC motors are much cheaper, but then you are dealing with an inverter running off of your battery (Likely any electrically driven compressor is going to necessitate the installation of a high(er) output alternator. And then, how much drag are you looking at on your motor with an inverter, versus directly driving it from the engine? I'd like to know.

Sorry Karl, that thing is a joke. If you could cool an american passenger car on 700 watts every automaker would be doing it to beat the CAFE

11k btu is no where near enough to get the job done.

But let's look at the numbers for a second.

A typical Sanden SD709 soaks up over 4kw on the input shaft. With a 100% efficient electric motor (impossible to achieve) that would be 4kw @ 14v. 4,000/14 = 285 amps to run the motor.

So, where is the 285 amps going to come from in a Cobalt? A battery, charged with an 80 amp alternator?

No. This can NOT be done.

B, You and I know that. I was hoping the OP would see that.

I think I could make it work; but the Cobalt is going to need a trailer for the gen set and battery pack.

Karl:

Seems like this one comes up every year too.

I think an old Kysor unit on the roof, and a 10hp gas engine from Harbor Freight in the trunk running a York would be the way to go. Good condensor airflow, and plenty of capacity. Then the luggage can go in the trailer...

Put the vehicle in reverse and turn on the heat, that produces cold air....
