86 Ford Truck Adapter Seal Question

scjarena on Mon August 04, 2014 12:41 PM User is offline

Year: 1986
Make: Ford
Model: F350
Refrigerant Type: r12
Country of Origin: United States

I'm hoping somebody could help me out with what seal to use in an adapter with goes between the condenser and the liquid line. Truck is a 1986 and I was told that the "adapter" is actually a check valve which was used for a year or two around 1986, but I don't see any check valve in it. Anyways it has a deep groove for a seal, but typical round O-rings will not provide a correct seal. Does anyone know anything about this? The top pic shows the groove for the seal. Bottom pic is the adapter as installed. Thanks

That looks like an AN or "hose swivel" fitting on the small end (between the hose and the adapter.) Those work like flare fittings-- two matching tapered metal parts forced together make a metal on metal seal. There is no need for an o-ring or other rubber sealing part.

If you're converting to 134a you may want to rebuild the line using barrier hose and get rid of the need for any adapters in the process.

Looks like the old sight glass ass'y connecting the nylon hose ass'y. As MK stared, just eliminate it.

Ok Thanks for the info. I see the tapered surfaces on both side which could seal like an AN fitting, but I did pull out an old rubber seal out of the groove on that end, unless somebody put in there years ago in a previous repair. I plan to stay with R12. How would I go about replacing the hose and fitting with a one piece hose? Does someone manufacture a hose for this application or would it have to custom made? Thanks

I ordered a new line and one end is smaller. Anyknow know of any fitting adapters available to make this work, or did I simply get the wrong line? Any help would be appreciated.

Below is the new line next to the original.
