s10 AC help.

ronnietlane on Thu May 08, 2014 1:22 PM User is offline

Year: 2000
Make: chevrolet
Model: s10
Engine Size: 4.3
Refrigerant Type: r134a
Ambient Temp: 75
Pressure Low: 35
Pressure High: 120
Country of Origin: United States

When i bought the truck the ac wasn't working, the compressor was unplugged. I hooked up manifold gauges and there was no refrigerant in the system. So i filled it up to the trucks specs which was 12 oz. of refrigerant with red dye in it. Started the truck and the ac on full blast. Compressor kicks on. Gauges read low 35 lbs, high 120 lbs. When truck is off low side 70 lbs, high side 90 lbs. No signs of dye anywhere, but will check pressure again later to see if its really leaking. . Not sure where to go from here. Im new to ac repair. I checked all the electrical components, compressor getting voltage, relay working, pressure switch working, all fuses good. Any help would be appreciated.

You may still have a refrigerant leak. And re-check that refrigerant amount, 12 ounces seems like a small amount - but I'm not experienced with S-10.

Yup, looks like it is leaking. However, I would recheck the specs. 12 ounces seemed way low to me. specs here it shows specs to be 28 or 30 ounces depending on what compressor is on your truck.

I bought a can of 134a at w**-mart that had a stop leak, oil, and dye in it. It also had a hose and a gauge, so now I'm an AC pro!

thanks for the reply. On the sticker under the hood it reads "use only r-134a refridgerant#12345922 or equiv. 1lb, 12 oz (0.79kg)".

When I filled it, i checked inside to see if cold air was coming out of vents. There was none. So my question for that is: If there is any kind of leak, even though i just filled it up, I wont get any kind of cool air?

1 pound and 12 ounces so 28 ounces total.

yeah lol i had a moment. Im trying to track down the leak now now. the refrigerant had red dye in and I cant find it anywhere. I might have to get the uv dye. Almost all of my refrigerant is gone now.

We all have "moments."
