ICE 32

louie727 on Tue December 24, 2013 10:00 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1988
Make: Volvo
Model: 740
Engine Size: 2.3
Refrigerant Type: R-12

I am putting in a new compressor and it came with ICE 32 installed. I will be using mineral oil and R-12 for the system. Is ICE 32 compatible with R-12 and mineral oil? Should I drain it or leave it in? Thanks

Ice 32 is an additive to the oil, since you're using R12, I would drain the compressor and flush it with mineral oil..Then add back the proper amount of mineral oil for the job..Other than that you could go to their website and see if it is compatable with R12.. Drain it and use mineral and you don't need to worry..Hope this helps...

The mineral oil is number 525 in case you did not know.

The manufacturer's website only talks about testing of Ice 32 as an additive to PAG. You need to be sure they didn't put PAG in the compressor, because it chemically reacts with R-12 and becomes sludge. You would need to work a bunch of mineral oil through it to clear out the PAG.

I am not convinced r32 is compatable with R12/R12 residues/oils. It is touted for use in r134a systems- best I can deduce - it is a fluorinated hydrocarbon refrigerant, about 35-40%, balance is oil/additives. I would definitely beware for an R12 system/compatability.

R32 is not just a lubricant- it is a mixture of lube and refrigerant. probably r134a (r12 would be chloro-fluoro, NOT just fluoro). JUST fluoro is R134a.
