Can I replace just the clutch?

mhfd112 on Wed August 14, 2013 7:04 PM User is offline

Year: 2005
Make: 2005
Model: Taurus
Engine Size: 3.0

My buddy brought his Taurus over for me to check out. The compressor has been bypassed by putting a shorter belt on. Compressor turns smooth, but looks like the clutch plate is coming apart.

Can I just replace the clutch, and if I do, does the compressor come out from the top or the bottom?

Thanks

How much space is there in front of the compressor? I can't say for sure on that car, but I have worked on some cars where I was able to remove a tire and some plastic covers and remove the clutch with the compressor still on the car. It would save recharging the system and other work that would need to be done. Take a good look at this option and good luck!

I bought a can of 134a at w**-mart that had a stop leak, oil, and dye in it. It also had a hose and a gauge, so now I'm an AC pro!

If there's not enough room, you can probably unbolt the compressor, leaving the hoses attached, to get the clutch off..

Cost as much for a clutch as a new compressor. Plus the clutch failed because the compressor got hot in 90 % of these Ford failures. Lot of expense and time to do it over again in 30 days.

Agree with this, actually a compressor with a new clutch on it just cost a few dollars more.

Son just got rid of his 2000 Taurus a couple of months ago, that car amazed me with 260K miles on it, AC still working fine, but did have to replace the blower motor about four months ago. Had low compression in one of the cylinders, but the rocker panels were going to pot with rust. With unibodies, when that happens, time to get rid of it.

Can you tell me where the orifice tube is located?

If it doesn't look clean, and I'm guessing it won't, I probably won't try to help with this one.

I believe your car has the three lugs on the clutch plate? If they are coming apart, change the compressor it's shot... The O tube is located on the right side frame rail, usually covered with a rubber sleeve.. (not all) but check it as I feel the compressor wore and heat destroyed the insides and you may find parts of it on the O-tube...Hope this helps..
