How do you loosen the nuts of these AC hoses?

philoprof on Sun June 09, 2013 1:08 PM User is offline

Year: 1981
Make: Mercedes
Model: 380sl
Engine Size: 380
Refrigerant Type: R134
Ambient Temp: 85
Pressure Low: 0
Pressure High: 0
Country of Origin: United States

As I'm in the process of taking my AC system apart, I was wondering if anyone knew off-hand the size of the large nut on the AC hose in the attached photo? The largest open-end wrench I have is 7/8, and that's to small.

In addition, I was wondering what the best way was to loosen that nut and the one in the other photo without over-stressing anything, as I can't seem to get a counter-hold on anything in the second photo?

Thanks in advance.

You can drill a oil hole rearward on the nut to lube the nut to tube contact surfaces if steel to aluminum galvanic corrosion/etc. blocks WD40 penetration from the exterior.
