Alfa ac messed up- rad runs too long

pippo on Tue December 11, 2012 6:27 PM User is offline

Year: 1987
Make: Alfa Romeo
Model: spider veloce
Engine Size: 2.0
Refrigerant Type: R12

Low side says 45-50. High says only 100. man, thats low. Get cool ac. Still, isnt aht high psi way too low?? BUT, geez- when the car gets parked/shut off after a trip, the rad cooling fan runs for maybe 1/2 hour!!! Geez- I had to disconnect battery! What could be up, people? Clogged condenser?

What's your ambient temp? High side highly depends on it.

You'll need to pull a schematic to see how the controls work. Just about anything could be going on with an Italian car.

OK, MK, ambient (outside ) temp was about oh, 85 deg F. Yes, could be electrical wire feeding the button style temp sensor on the rad fan shroud. That thing is finicky- sooooo delicate. I could check the 2 leads going into it, although, if it was loose, that would trip the fan to run constantly, I think...

Geez, I finally get it, TRB!! Thanks, Man. I was looking at the "posts" #, which is always the same. That confused me, as Im used to seeing the "post #", which, for each subsequent post is one more than the previous . Not sure if Im explaining it right. But I get itnow. Thanks for checking.

Sounds like the Compressor is Tired, at that Ambient Temp, 100 degrees is pretty close to Static Pressure, Amazing that the system still cools. Your gauges might possibly be faulty?

For fans, study the wiring diagrams, they may be ECU Activated. Try Find the Relay and Test it on the bench to see if it's sticking.... otherwise the trigger signal for the relay (Whether it be power or ground triggered), is staying on when it should not.

Youre not gonna believe this, but I left this alone during the winter, and recently added a new higher Amp alternator, and BOOM- the ac fan running problem DISSAPPEARED!!!!!!! No more problem!! How can that happen by just installing a new alternator, people?? I am haaaaaaaaappy!
