AC Hose Broke/discharged oil and r-12

cw43 on Mon October 08, 2012 5:39 PM User is offline

Year: 1971
Make: Olds
Model: Cutlass
Engine Size: 455
Refrigerant Type: r-12
Ambient Temp: 80
Country of Origin: United States

I had the AC hose from behind the A-6 compressor break and discharged everything under the hood at 75mph. I cannot find the specs on how much oil to add back to the system. Also, for some reason the clutch burned up at the same time I believe. Does anyone happen to know how much oil to put back in each component? I plan on changing the dryer and flushing the evap and condensor just in case. Thanks for the help.

By all means flush the entire system....replace the R/D. Replace or rebuild the hose assembly utilizing the correct crimps for your system. Do not use worm/hose type clamps. Lube charge should be 10-11 oz of mineral lube (r12) or PAG150 (134a). Be sure to drain the sump of the new compressor and refill to spec's. Unfortunately, I do not have a refrigerant specification for this model year at this office. I you do not have this info, post a reply and I can access the info once I return to the shop.
A strong suggestion would be to retain the system in it's R12 configuration.
Good luck with your repair.

Thanks for the info and yes i still need the proper amount of oil each component takes. Thanks again for your time.

You put all the oil into the compressor thru the oil plug in the side. It will distribute itself. The only part that actually needs oil to work is of course the compressor.

Refrigerant charge is 3.75 lbs/60 oz.
If this were my vehicle, I would stay with R12. Performance/longevity of parts will be better.
Good luck !

Yes I'm staying with R-12 and I'm hesitant on the prior post to put all the oil into the compressor. I've added oil to each component separately before but I cannot remember how much?? Would you happen to know? Thanks

That vehicle requires 4 lbs of R12 and 10 or 11 oz 525 mineral oil. If you flush the entire system, put all the oil in the compressor. The A6 compressor has a sump for the oil. No other component requires oil so as said previously, put it all in the compressor.
