Ford FX-15 A/C compressor noise - already dead?

tomluoma on Tue September 04, 2012 6:57 PM User is offline

Year: 92
Make: Ford
Model: F-250
Engine Size: 460
Refrigerant Type: R-12
Ambient Temp: 80
Country of Origin: United States

The A/C cools just fine but there is a noise coming from the compressor.
This noise occurs only when the A/C compressor clutch is engaged. I have put a stethoscope on it and it seems to be coming from the front end of the compressor.
At idle it seems to be clicking once per compressor rev. The noise is very similar to a sticky lifter noise.

If this is an indication it has already caught the black death then I'll just I'll just run it until it realizes it's dead and replace everything.

If not what should I do at this stage?

92, F250, 460, E4OD, FX-15 A/C compressor still running R-12, 210K mile

If you have a FX-15 that is making noise. Good bet it is about to go. Those compressors were junk.

Compressor clutch might need adjusting (shim) might be slipping

Congrats on 20 years and 210,000 miles with an FX-15... that thing should go into the record books!

I'm all for PM, but if it were my vehicle, in this case I'd run it until it blows apart because the damage is probably already done and you're gonna need to replace everything either way. The only drawback is the damn thing might seize up, and if a single serpentine belt, your ride home will be in a tow truck.
