Compressor clutch engaged with no refrigerant and no power

metalgod3082 on Fri May 25, 2012 9:14 AM User is offline

Year: 1999
Make: Nissan
Model: Maxima
Engine Size: 3.0
Refrigerant Type: R134A
Ambient Temp: 90
Pressure Low: N/A
Pressure High: N/A
Country of Origin: United States

I've had a refrigerant leak which looked to be coming from the high/lo side lines going into the compressor. I also checked the evaporator which seemed to be leaking and was really nasty. I replaced O-rings, evaporator, expansion valve, and am about to do the dryer and recharge. Well I haven't gotten around to recharging yet and have just been driving with no A/C but I noticed a squeeling noise coming from the belt under the hood. So I checked it out and the compressor clutch was spinning with no refrigerant in the system and the power connected unplugged from the compressor. Do you think the compressor is now ruined? If not, do you think it is just the bearing that needs to be replaced? Thanks for the help.
