Pawn shop Tek-Mate detectors

Dave in Texas on Tue March 06, 2012 10:32 AM User is offlineView users profile

Local pawn shops have quite a few Tek-Mate 705-202 leak detectors 'in stock', of course they know nothing about them, but the prices are under $100. The brand has a good reputation and I'm wondering what to look for when buying one used? I'm a diy'r and I want to add this tool to the arsenal. I've seen then as low as $10. The sensor is replaceable, so is it an expensive replacement item? Thanks.

The sensor seems to be about a $50.00 part. If the unit powers up, beeps, and the pump runs, it seems a safe bet that that most that could be wrong is the sensor. They should respond to "duster" gas (make sure it is diflouroethane, or 1,1,1,2 tetraflouroethane (aka R-134a)-- some duster cans are filled with HC) if you are allowed to test it before buying.

Bought one for $50. It tested ok. No filter tho. Is having one installed important? I found the part number for them, but 20 cost $1/ea with mailing. Something I can use instead of this little one-dollar filter? Thanks

It's just a little plug of foam, should be able to fabricate one out of a lawnmower air filter or something. It's just there to keep lots of liquid or dust from going up the tube.
