Bench test for a 2001 civic comp

People,

2001 civic EX, comprssor on bench. I think it is a scroll. Wanting to know if I can simply turn the shaft with finger plugging the suction port and be able to generate enough "pull"/suction to confirm some integrity of the comp. Also, should I be able to simply attach the car battery's 12 v to the hot wire and ground the black wire on the comp?? I heard sometimes you have to be real careful if a comp has a diode-that if that is the case, not so straight forward to bench test with a car battery. Does my Sanden scroll have a diode, people?
Of course, this is to check to see if the clutch clicks toward the outer plate....

Thanks!
