hunt-continues-for-explosive-reefers

This isn't about auto AC, but AC in those big containers that we see shipped all over the world. It seems that some were being serviced and some counterfeit freon was put in some of them and there was some reaction and some have exploded. It seems that the work was done in Vietnam.

Tim if you feel that this should be deleted, that's OK, I just thought it was a good read on AC.

Here is the link.

Wow. I wonder what the VC used to turn those systems into bombs.

Considering the amount of money at stake, it's strange that it has not been figured out by now.

I bet the stuff is already on ebay. Maybe it'll be sold as genuine R-134a or maybe called something else. The chance of a fatal explosion of a car system might be slightly lower but it's still not going to be fun.

Thanks for posting that Karl. My old friend the "safe" chlorinated solvent.

Manufacturing trimethyl aluminium inside a closed loop system - a neat trick to make a very hard to neutralize bomb. I wish them luck with finding a way to safely repair a system with any quantity of trimethyl aluminium mixed with the crankcase oil in the compressor. Once you open a line, the air gets in...

Probably best to just seal the compressor off & remove it - then hand it off to the bomb squad. If you could be very certain that all of the trimethyl aluminium was in the sump - and no place else in the system.

Yep, that job is one I don't want.
