Nippondenso 10P15C Seal Change

Hi, when I changed this seal, the circlip groove shaved rubber off the O-ring on the outside of the steel seal half as I pushed it in. I lubed it with PAG oil; how can I prevent this?

I got it on the second try. Used more compressor oil and went for it.
