Dumb question about refrigerant

jamit on Sun July 24, 2011 4:53 PM User is offline

I had a questions about refrigerant . I wanted to know is how it works does it last forever unless you have a leak or over the years does it get lower and lower? So is it normal for a car to get low on freon? Thanks

The refrigerant does not "wear out" - but it does leak.

It is virtually impossible to seal a system in a vehicle as well as they are in a home appliance. There is a rotating shaft seal on the front of a compressor, several feet of rubber hose, and many joints sealed with rubber seals.

Over time any MVAC system will lose some refrigerant. I believe the allowable leak spec for just the service valves adds up to a half ounce per year. Eventually your system will be too low on refrigerant to work properly - even if the car was parked.
