On a system with an A6 compressor, roughly how much of the oil actually circulates through the system?
That's assuming the sump has the proper amount of oil from the get go. I guess the same question would apply to other compressors with a sump, such as the older York and Tecumseh compressors. Most of the older systems that I see get a full flush, reseal, etc. so I've never really paid attention to how much oil was flushed from the remainder of the system components.
Also, when assembling a system dry with an A6 (or other sump type) compressor, I just add the full recommended amount to the sump. Is this correct or should I be spreading it around a bit?
I do lube the POA, STV, TXV and other components with moving parts on assembly.
Never had an issue but I want to be sure I'm doing it right. The oil amounts given for the dual system Suburban in the above mentioned post made me question my methods.
Thanks for any input guys.
Good question, but I don't have the answer. Obviously, some is circulating, question is how much. Starting out dry, I too always add all the oil to sump compressors, then again I try to do that with all compressors... if it doesn't spill out.
I think in the case of sump type compressors, oil should not be distributed - let the physics the of the system distribute the oil - the compressor is really what needs the oil anyway.

Thanks Joe.
That was always my thought.
I do spread the oil around a bit on sumpless units. It can be tricky keeping all of the oil in the compressor while trying to connect the hoses. Usually 4oz in the comp. and the rest in the evap and accumulator.
I've ended up with plenty of oil on my head trying to sqeeze a compressor in place without tipping it. If all the oil fits in the compressor, I try to carefully get it as close as possible with the clutch face down until I can bolt up the manifold... but it doesn't always work out that way. That's why I leave a fitting or two open, this way if the oil spills out, after remeasuring a partial amount in the compressor, I can add the balance into one of the other open fittings.
