any difference between Genetron & DuPont?

Arcseeker on Sun June 19, 2011 5:23 PM User is offline

I'm looking at R12 on Ebay.

Is there any difference in quality between Genetron brand and DuPont?

Both are respectable manufacturers (Genetron is made by Honeywell), so I would not expect any difference in quality.

If I buy a 30# cylinder, and I only use it for me and my friend's rigs, as long as I keep it sealed up tight, will it stay in the jug for a long time? Or will I slowly lose it all after it's cracked the first time? Hoping it's not like silicone and other chemicals degrading quickly after I open them

Went and got 609 cert today for $20.

The cylinder is positive pressure and will leak if either the cylinder or the valve is permitted to corrode. Just keep the cylinder out of the rain and out of direct heat. R12/R134A will not degrade over time.

I would buy a good brass cap with rubber/? gasket to backup the needle valve built into the jug. Keep it stored in the coolest place available that is dry. Not good to have rust eat through the side of a 30# jug and not be aware the 'full' tank is not.
You can also look on c-list for R12 locally rather than doing the shipping thing on eBay. That's what I did, and got small cans for a pretty good price buying all 6 or 7 at the same time. Pretty close to $10/can if memory serves. Boy I hate saying that, but it seems to be more and more common as time goes by. Seems that the 30# jugs were in the same price range, well, actually more like $10/lb instead of $10/12oz, so a little less expensive. BTB, the asking prices varied from that to over $400 for a 30# cylinder.... ??
