Water pump on my 08 Chrysler Aspen (5.7L) recently went out, throwing the belt as it did. Mechanic that I took it to said the belt, or a piece of it, knocked out the seal to the A/C compressor, requiring a new compressor. Doesn't quite pass my smell test.
Am I being too pessimistic or the mechanic's explanation plausible?
Thanks.
I suppose anything is possible, but I just don't see how a belt can take out a compressor seal. The belt tearing off the clutch connector or wire I could see, but not the seal. The seal is behind the compressor clutch plate, would be almost impossible for the belt to whack it.
But even if the seal did get damaged, why not just replace the seal rather than the whole compressor? A good A/C shop can do this with their eyes closed.
Joe
Thanks, JJM.
