1991 Jeep Cherokee R-12 to 134 convert

Year: 1991
Make: Jeep
Model: Cherokee XJ
Engine Size: 4.0
Refrigerant Type: R-12
Country of Origin: United States

Hi everyone,

Just picked up this little Cherokee to use as a secondary vehicle. The stock A/C system is shot - hoses near the battery are corroded and it needs a condenser. It has been sitting open for a few years so I'd say the compressor is probably needing replaced also.

The plan is new PF condenser, new drier, new hoses (lucky to live close to AZ Mobile Air!) with 134 fittings and switches, flush system and give it a go.

Questions -
Should I replace the expansion valve? Will a stock replacement compressor work OK, or should I look at something different? I live in AZ so I need to deal with the summer temps here!

Sanden will work with R134a. No need to swap the valve as long as it is working.

If the system was sitting open as long as you say, I personally would replace the TXV. if it's not bad now, it will be soon . Murphy's law. Why do the job twice? If you have aproblem you'll blame the TXV anyway.
