What is a good price to recover refridgerant

bob234 on Mon September 20, 2010 3:07 AM User is offline

Since I am good friends with a auto mechanic, he recovers my refrigerant for free, sometimes for a 6 pack of beer. He said he charges $20 under the table for any other person as long as the boss isn't there. He said the boss only wants the recovery machine used on full A/C jobs only. I know most places charge way more than this, so what is the average price for recovering refrigerant?

I received a quote from my local Goodyear shop for $45.

He won't be there long if the boss finds out. Just takes one contaminated vehicle and all heck will break loose. Plus it is being disrespectful to his employer!

I'd fire that mechanic's as* if I was the boss and knew about that. Dishonesty in one area makes it tough for one to trust for other things...

35 cents is a darn good price, 6 cents is even better. Better than that is getting 80 bucks a pound for your R-12.

LOL, answering your question literally.

We don't charge to suck it out and hold it for you. I'll give you a reciept with the amount I took out. When you want it recharged I'll charge you my regular rate of $65 to evac and $25 a lb for R134a not including the R134a that I took out of your car.

So say I took out 1lb and it holds 2. I only charge you for what extra I had to add which is 1 lb @ $25 a pound. R12 os $60 a lb.

Amen, using the company equipment, property and notoriety for personal gain. He is not even giving the owner part of the intake. I would fire his a$$ on the spot if I found out about something like that. How can you trust this employee with anything at that point. It's a 2 way street on how an owner and employee treat each other.

And I agree completely. If the employee is "stealing" from the others that work at the shop by "working under the table"....... he is stealing just the same.

Good point. Not only is that personal stealing from the owner. He is also stealing from all the others that work at the company. They may not be stealing directly from his fellow employees! They surly are by the ability to provide raises, health care and an over all better working environment.

Oops. not good to out your "good friend" on the www. If the boss is doing his due diligence to record refrigerant quantities as part of his refrigerant handling management; this "under-the-table" operation will surely be discovered in time.

If he is doing this on the side. What's stopping him from reclaiming into his own cylinder and using it on after hour repairs?
