Recharge desiccant in drier

emsvitil on Fri August 13, 2010 4:42 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 2005
Make: Saturn
Model: Vue
Engine Size: 2.2
Refrigerant Type: R134a
Ambient Temp: NA
Pressure Low: NA
Pressure High: NA
Country of Origin: United States

Nobody seems to have my drier in stock. so..........

I'm wondering if it's possible to flush out the drier to get rid of the oil then

Pull a vacuum on it while heating it up to drive out the water from the desiccant to 'recharge' it?

How hot, how much vacuum and how long?

thanks

You would need inert gas and high temperature to remove water from most desiccants. And high temperatures would likely destroy the bag that holds the pellets, causing huge problems. Did you contact the board sponsor AMA? ACkits.com

I dunno how much 3x the normal price is, but the drier for my RX-7 is difficult to find as well, and I found one company that will re-manufacture (cut open, replace desiccant, re-weld) your drier for around $100.

I'll check inventory tomorrow...see if it is available.

We once 'rebuilt' accumulators....back in the day.....cut them open...replaced the dessicants...did an upgrade....used larger dessicants than GM...rewelded and pressure tested. Need to test with refrigerant...not air.....contaminates the dessicant.......for a 'bunch' less than 100....but then gas was less than a dollar...cokes were about a quarter.....movies...yes, TRB they were in color but were a lot less than $10.00

Ed, this site usually doesn't permit references to other vendors, but might in this case. It looks like rockauto.com has it for just under $47. It's FOUR SEASONS Part # 83101, and the little picture looks just like the one above.

Once you scroll to your year, vehicle, etc., it's under "Heat & Air Conditioning, then under AC Receiver-Drier/accumulator.

vs $21.49 at ACkits..........

Plus shipping......... (so about $33 (ackits) vs $55 (rockauto))

If an online ordering system takes your order, there's some expectation that you'll get the part in a timely manner (or be notified right-away, and you personally don't have to bug them about the order)...........
