Aftermarket JEEP AIR AC help

DMorgan on Fri July 16, 2010 12:15 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 2003
Make: Jeep
Model: Wrangler Rubicon
Engine Size: 4.0
Refrigerant Type: 134A
Ambient Temp: 60
Pressure Low: 60
Pressure High: 60
Country of Origin: United States

Bought a Jeep Rubicon about 15 months ago, without AC. Did research, came up with a complete Jeep Air kit. Ordered, paid to have it installed May 2009.
Picked it up, and it has never actually worked. Took it 2 that place several times, and a Jeep dealership and it has yet to work correctly. I had paid a lot of money for both the kit, installation, and then the Jeep dealer with it not ending up working.

Problems:
Compressor short cycles, Jeep never gets cool.
With the Jeep off, at about 60to 65 deg in the shade, the PSI on H and L are both 60PSI

When I turn on the AC unit,

L= goes to about 35-37psi
H= goes to about 100 psi these are the pressures when the compressor kicks off.

when off, it goes down to

L= 43 pis
H 70PSI
Vent temp 47deg
It cycles about every 3 seconds.

Would appreciate any help.
I have already replaced the pressure switch in the on the accumulator.

Additional Info.

When it first would not work, I called Jeep Air and and then went back to the shop, I came up with that the shop put oil in the compressor, when it already came with oil, so JEEP AIR sent a new acumulator, they installed it, re vacuumed it, and re charged with identical problems.

THanks,

Dennis

Wish it was 65f here inn the shade today...

Put the gauges on it. Set the cabin fan to high. Pull the connector off of the cycling switch on the accumulator. Prepare a jumper wire to fit in the connector. Do NOT install the jumper in the connector yet.

Start the engine & turn on the A/C. While watching the gauges with the engine at idle, install the jumper in the connector. Observe the gauges. After 30 seconds record the high & low pressures - and post them here. Do NOT run with that jumper installed for more than 60 seconds.

OK, did it, 35 on the low, and 125 high

Looks like you just need to adjust the cycling switch a bit, and check things on a warmer day.

It should cycle off at 27 to 29 psi.

What are the high ambient temps where you are located?

I have already replaced the switch once, thinking it was it, it had no change.
It will be about 75 today in the Seattle area.

I would buy an adjustable switch....do you know if any auto part store has them??

Your switch is probably adjustable. If not, you can certainly buy one that is. Grab your flashlight, and look at the switch:

.

Pull the plug, and look between the terminals in the switch body:
.

That screw is the adjustment.

OK, thanks a lot. I looked at my switch, and it is not adjustable. I am going to head down to AutoZone and get one that is.
Thanks. Hopefully that works.

Auto Zone did not have this switch, do you have any suggestions where to get it?
thanks,.

There are several types of adjustable switches. The one in the pics is a Ford unit. Does yours look like that, or does it have a different plug / terminals?

The site Sponsor, AMA has several kinds in stock. Call them monday morning - 602-233-0090 They can get you what you need, and if a mating connector is needed they can supply a pigtail.
