System will not take enough freon

frogallen on Thu November 26, 2009 7:03 PM User is offline

Year: 1995
Make: Ford
Model: Thunderbird
Engine Size: 3.8
Refrigerant Type: r134a

Replaced my system with used components directly off of another working ac car.
In the process of restoring one car so it was not needed on it at the time and this "should" get me by on the other. LOL.

However I pull a vac on the system and it will not take enough freon first shot to make the compressor kick on. What could be wrong?

It will hold 28-30 inches for hours after pulling vac. I have tried twice and same thing happens. Could the accumulator be so junked up with moisture that it will not allow enough freon to be put into the system? It will get to 50 psi max and nothing. Did not try to bypass the pressure switch, but did try 2 different ones.

I have an old vacuum pump. I wonder if it is not pulling enough out of the system. Or is 28 inches, 28 inches?

Lost. Help me guys.

I would jump (for a few seconds only) 12 volt positive to the compressor clutch, and see if it clicks on. You may want to use a 12 volt jumper with an inline fuse.

Try jumping the cycling switch, make sure 12v is getting to the switch.. Also, try tapping the clutch plate inwards, if it grabs, you may have a clutch gap adjustment problem. let us know what you find...

Well jumping the switch it runs immediately.
And stops immediately once removed.

I put another switch on and same deal.

Went ahead and charged it all up with the jumper in place.

Same deal.

So I then let some pressure blow out the fitting where the switch screws on and it seems to be working now. I guess we will see.

Did you use a new cycling switch?? or an old one layimng around?? If jumping the cycling switch worked, that is the area of your problem... And make sure it's not in the harness part...
