R4 experiment valid?

DontKnowSquat on Thu June 04, 2009 8:00 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1981
Make: Buick Regal
Model: Sports Coupe
Engine Size: 3.8
Refrigerant Type: R134a
Country of Origin: United States

Well I compressed the shell onto the cylinder vane, bolted up the front hub to the vane assembly and installed the new shaft seal.

I then added a little PAG 150, capped the rear A/C hose ports and placed the compressor on my vise. Next I proceeded to turn the shaft several times to make sure the bearings and everything else turn freely enough.

After several turns I began to hear a little hissing sound coming out from the front shaft seal and then some oil begins to pour out from it. Is this normal?

If I turn too many times the cap I placed on the rear A/C ports pops out. I would think thats ok?

Is this a good test?

Yeah it's a tight fit. I'll remove it again tomorrow to check it. I can sill use the OEM ceramic if this seal craps out. But so far the only problem area I'm experiencing is with this seal.

Well I removed the snap ring and it was good and tight. I then removed the shaft seal and short of the nick I put on the metal rim while tapping it out , (you can barely make it out), I don't see any visable damage on the seal itself. I'm going to install the ceramic seal and do the same test to see if there is any differance.

P.S. Why is it that I can't see my own uploaded images on the board?

When you upload the pic, you have to click the little pic on the left side of the information bar, right next to the underlined U then put yopu URL in the box that pops up.. Also have to resize the pics to around 640x..
