Mazda 626 Intermittent Cooling

93texexp on Sat August 16, 2008 3:51 PM User is offline

Year: 1997
Make: Mazda
Model: 626
Engine Size: 4 cyl
Refrigerant Type: R-134A
Ambient Temp: 92
Pressure Low: 40
Pressure High: 175-200
Country of Origin: Japan

I have a '97 Mazda 626 with intermittent cooling problems.

My gauge readings are as noted and the air temp. at the vent furthest from the evaporator is 58 degrees ... when the system is working. Additionally, the equalized pressure is 100 psi and the relative humidity is about 90%.

The problem is that the system operates for about 15-20 minutes after a cold start then, the system shuts down. The compressor actually stops running, that is to say, the clutch disengages and the compressor no longer turns.

This is my daughter's car so, I don't drive it or ride in it very often. I have, however, experienced this myself so, I know it's real. In fact, I have a vague memory of driving this car and having this problem and then, after about 15-20 minutes of inoperation, it begins to operate again briefly before becoming inoperable again. This car rarely makes trips of over 30 minutes so, it's hard to say if this problem really is an on/off/on/off situation, although I think it is.

I'm at a loss as to how to attack this problem. Is it an electrical problem? Mechanical? I just don't know.

Any help, advice or tips as to how to attack this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

When it stops, are there any blinking lights on the ac control?, check the clutch gap for .02...Let us know what you find.. Also check that the relay is tight, when it stops working try tapping on the relay.. Hope this helps..
