Bobby82490 on Sun June 08, 2008 7:12 PM User is offline

Year: 1998
Make: Ford
Model: F-150
Engine Size: 5.4l
Refrigerant Type: 134
Ambient Temp: 90
Pressure Low: ?
Pressure High: ?
Country of Origin: United States

Im interested in learning how to diagnose and fix automotive A/C, for my personal vehicles. Im going to go to Harbor Freight and buy a set of gauges and a vac pump.

Vac Pump: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92475
Gauges: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=92649

Will these do what i need to do? I know they arent the best quality, but im not going to be doing alot of vehicles with them.. maybe 3-4 vehicles.

Get the Mastercool book.

Cheap tools just don't do it for me. Several people have reported that the couplers on their cheap gauge set simply didn't fit on the car fittings. Spend a little more for a better gauge set.

The air-powered vacuum pump is useless. You really must use a mechanical pump for good results. Some local parts stores let you borrow one.

Even if you invest $400 in tools, compared to going to a garage it'll pay for itself after only a few simple jobs or one major repair.

I agree with MK378, get the Mastercool DIY Kit you will be much happier in the end.

I went to a pawn shop today to look for a better brand of gauges. They had 2 sets of JB gauge sets.

They were these ones: http://www.jbind.com/catalog/Page_12_JB_Industries_2007_catalog.pdf
On the gauges they didnt show R-134 on it... so will these gauges work?

So, we have a negative on the Harbor Freight air powered vacuum pump ?? This is hardly any consensus....
R12 Freon kits are becoming worthless; but they may be converted ???

You would have to buy the R134a hoses and couplers, you only need to read PSI, but you can get a very good set of mastercool R134a gauges ready for R134a. Why bother screwing around making things fit that were not made for it..Just my opinion.. And NO to the harbor frieght gauges and vacuum pump, you don't want toys, you want tools...

The H-F pump claims 28.3" vacuum at sea level. Since there is 29.8" pressure at sea level, this means that the H-F pump can withdraw down to 1.5" Hg. That's 38,000 microns, and not enough to boil the water out.
