Slow vacuum leak

Dave in Texas on Tue April 01, 2008 10:14 PM User is offlineView users profile

Changed OT/accumulator. Upon applying vacuum, gauge went to 30hg with pump On. Pump On for 45min. After 1hr from Off, the gauge went down 15hg. I did this 3x and the same each time. I'm questioning the size of the 0-rings that came with the accumulator. The diameter was the same as I took off, the the thickness was 1.7mm as opposed to the 2.7mm I removed. Could the smaller thickness be the vacuum gremlin? I also got the O-ring kit for my car, but none matched the rings I removed from the old accumulator. All connections are tight and system was fully charged prior to being discharged.

It is possible that the orings are a contributor...or it could be the sealing areas of the hose/manifold assembly. Why not simply add a can of 134a into the system and check for leaks using a good leak detector (electronic type)....using a soapy mixture may not be sufficient to locate a leak of this type.
Good luck

Sure, drive on over...or down....located in sunny warm south FL.....but with the cost of fuel....maybe less expensive to simply purchase a leak detector...or have a shop test for you.....but if a vacation is in order.....hit the road.....heck....we can even recharge the darn thing when ya get here.......kill several birds with the same shot.....or then....since the system is fairly easy to service....simply located the correct orings, reinstall and retest....see what happens.....
One of the downsides of an attempt to accomplish a proper and successful a/c repair is the lack of correct tools to accomplish the task at hand....this applies not only to the DIYer...but also in the 'technical professional' side also.
Come on down.....heck...Ill check it for FREE....or perhaps you could buy a 12 pack of Coke.....diet...no caffeine.....

Well I do need to go to Miami.....long estate legal pita problem.....but problem solved with the car. It was what I thought, too small O-rings. I used those that came with the unit and I replaced them with thicker ones. Been holding 29.9hg for hours/hours now. I did this conversion 10yrs ago and want to check my math. R12 system held 2.4lbs refrigerant=38.4oz. 80% of 38.4=30.7oz. 30.7oz divided by 12oz(can)=2.56 cans. That read correct? Thanks for the offer. Maybe email me your address and if/when I drive down, I'll stop by with the diets!
