A/C not working

jeffl1980 on Mon August 13, 2007 12:12 PM User is offline

Year: 1997
Make: Saturn
Model: SC2
Engine Size: 1.9
Refrigerant Type: R134
Country of Origin: United States

When I bought my car the a/c blew really cold. After about 2 months with air it started getting wormer and wormer until it was not cold at all. After this I added some freon and it blew cold for a couple weeks. After this the compressor would not kick on. I added a can off stop leak/freon and a can of regular freon. The compressor kicked on but would not blow cold air. next day compressor stopped kicking on. Could the compressor be bad or do I have a big leak? If so were should I start looking for the leak?

If you were bleeding, would swallowing glue stop it? No, it would probably kill you. So why would you think dumping glue in your A/C system would stop it from leaking? Well, it's probably dead now.

The only salvation now might be having the system power flushed with the proper equipment IMMEDIATELY after it's opened, because that sealer crap sets up fast. Still might not help, and the compressor may have already been damaged by adding all that refrigerant and not adding oil (or the correct oil) with a leak that size.

Total system replacement is likely in order - including the evaporator. You might be able to get by with just repairing or replacing whatever was leaking, but that junk will have hardened up in so many different places, the system will probably never function properly until EVERY part is replaced... compressor, manifold, condenser, receiver dryer, expansion valve, evaporator, switches, and all the lines and hoses. Another can of "magic" does a system in. Sorry I don't have better news.

Just to add to Joe's post, you should have the system evacuated, then recharged with R134a, nothing else but some UV dye (to aid in finding leaks) .. You need to get the system pressures, but need to have the system charged with the full amount.. Adding refrigerant (not to mention sealers) is not good for your AC system..You need both high and low side pressures.. Your problem now is going to be finding a shop that will do "if" they know you added sealer...Hope this helps..
