Can I use an argon gas cylinder for nitrogen?

Post by DontKnowSquat »

It's been years since I posted on this forum and had to re-register to the newer forum. Anyhow my question has to do with buying this brand new tank cylinder so I can use it for nitrogen, https://www.harborfreight.com/welding/w ... 92807.html

It's marketed for Argon. Does it make any difference? Will welding supply companies fill it with nitrogen or does it need to be specifically made for Nitrogen? I already have a Nitrogen pressure regulator kit from Mastercool. Somebody please school me....

Thanks!

Nitrogen and Argon cylinders have the same valve. The industry standard for Inert Gasses is CGA 580.

If you have a virgin cylinder they can fill it with nitrogen easily. If it contains Argon now, they will want to "clean" it for gas purity. FYI, you can use Argon to test a system - so if you plan to use Argon later for something like a welding process, you could fill it with Argon now.
