Disengaging noise

It's a Mazda 3 BK (2008) that has a clicking? noise when it disengages.
I thought it might have been a clutch area problem, replaced the pulley bearing (it was on it's way out) but the noise remained. I worked out the click happens when manually turning the compressor shaft so I believe that rules out clutch/pulley/coil problems.
Does anyone have an idea of what the noise is from? Any thoughts appreciated.
Yes it cools but not quite as well as it used to but occasionally only for a few seconds when driving it stops cooling then starts up again.

Clutch being red like that usually means the compressor is about to go.

Thanks for the reply.
That was my gut feeling but never want to hear that.
I have been given a part number - C23661450E for the compressor by mazda spare parts. Obviously not going to get Mazda to do it - $1500AU just for the compressor.
Doing some research it would seem that multiple compressors can fit including aftermarket ones. Any recommendations of what to buy or not to buy?

I found a new panasonic compressor for approx $540 (~$410US) locally,

Hi
How did you solved this noise on the compressor in the end?
I have exactly same noise on my Mazda 3 .
I changed the expansion valve ,receiver drier , cabin filters , flushed all the pipes , changed the Pag oil and changed all the o-rings.
After recharging with r134 same horrible sound.
Clutch compressor works fine and the cooling at vent area is v good.
But this noise is driving me mad.

I do not think the clutch is generating the noise, I think it is the internals of the compressor. The compressor appears to free wheel after the clutch disengages much more than normal. I do not think she is compressing much LOL.

2 days ago i have been to an a/c tehnician and his opinion is that the compressor internal discharge valve is nit closing and the pressure on Hi side is making that noise.
In fact he said that after a/c pump stops the pressure on Hi and Low side must equalise through the expansion valve not through the compressor as it is now.
This sound's logical diagnose to me.
