do not use zip ties. they stretch after a while. As mentioned, use a hose clamp and then cork tape

Keep the muffler. Just do something about the connector fitting. Why not pruchase your own manifold ? You will use it enough to make your money back.

Does the inside evaporator have hoses to bring the cool air to the driver's seatside? It may be a simple electrical add on system. Sounds like the POA was changed to a POA eliminator set up. Do not forget you have in car temperature sensors. As mentioned, A6 compressors were not meant to be cycled. GM cycled them for one year and they found out what happens. Then they went to the R4 with larger clutch surfaces. This was around ...

Take it one step at a time. You do not need the refrigeration system to check and repair the inside blower system.
