Testing POA's is fairly easy. You'll need to fabricate a fitting to fit the input of the POA and an adaptor to convert shop air to the 1/4 inch refrigeration fitting. Take your manifold and close both handwheels. Connect the highside hose ( usually red) to shop air and supply at least 60 psi. I use 75psi. Connect the middle hose (Yellow) to the input of the POA. Connect the lowside hose ( usually blue) to the lowside fitting on the POA.
( In the images here, my low side hose appears brown. It is actually an old hose that was at one time white).
Now slowly open the high side handwheel. (The low side handwheel is CLOSED and stays closed). You'll get to a point that the POA will activate usually heard as a "pop". Now open the high side hand wheel all the way. (DO NOT APPLY MORE THAN 100 LBS SUPPLY PRESSURE) The reading on the low side guage should read 28 to 32 with 30 being optimal. THIS IS FOR R12.
For R134, you'll need to adjust the screw at the input of the POA (Remove the fitting you fabricated). Loosen the nut and turn the screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Tighten the nut. The screw usually wants to turn with the nut so you will have to compensate and play with the adjustment.
