My question is how is running hydrocarbon based refrigerants in an A/C system any more dangerous than running a car engine on gasoline?

I tried that Duracool in my 1980 Fiat 131 and wasn't all that impressed. About 55F on recirc mode at 95F ambient. Of course old Fiats don't have the best A/C systems to start with. Notice the tiny condensor.

A new dryer and larger condensor may make all the difference.

This stuff is still $10 a can. I bought some R-134a in 12 oz cans from Big Lots for $8.00 so it's not like it's any cheaper.

Why does my heater not make ice cubes like my freeze? Answer. Because one system is designed to do this while another is not.

I was headed in another direction, but since Tim replied...

That is a classic picture of the average HC clunker. Rusty, chronic leaker. Patched up, and probably not roadworthy in many places. Just imagine the substandard brake parts...

Crikey a 131.... I take it it never rains where you live.

Not seen a 131 over here for 25 years, they all dissolved in the rain..

Fuel systems, fuel pipes and fuel tanks are all designed with the storage and handling of flammable liquids... Air conditioning systems are designed to handle use and contain non flammable refrigerants, they are not intrinsically safe systems but cary on regardless bud, another dead Fiat can only be a good thing

FIAT.....Fix It Again Tony...
