Today's news/latest findings on r12 from NASA

pippo on Thu September 11, 2014 7:38 PM User is offline

Just released today, NASA completed years of research with about 300 scientists, and found ozone is "coming back" to 1970's levels. They credit this to phase out of R12. Wont ramble too much about it- if members here are interested they can click here:

happy reading, R134a afficionados.....LOL

Oh, r134a's days seem to be numbered too. Global warming potential. Just need a politician with enough courage.

"Paradoxically, heat-trapping greenhouse gases - considered the major cause of global warming - are also helping to rebuild the ozone layer, Newman said. The report said rising levels of carbon dioxide and other gases cool the upper stratosphere, and the cooler air increases the amount of ozone."

So Global Warming is fixing the Ozone layer. Unbelievable!

Question: What refrigerant do they install in new cars in India and China and Russia ? How much are these countries doing to help clean the atmosphers ?

Well, in a way, hecat, but GW may help the ozone, but it will come at a cost- while we may prevent 2 million people from skin cancer from recovering ozone level, tens of millions will 'drown' from sea level rising from GW. To be fair, r134a is a drop in the bucket when contributing to GW- CO2 is the big player, of course.

believe it or not, China is starting to aggressively address their enormous toxic levels of pollution- in Beijing and Shanghai. yes, they have a long way to go- like we had to with cities like Pitsburg and Los Angeles. .

I don't mean to be cynically antagonistic, and I do not mean to make light of a serious environmental stewardship issue; but do we really have 2 million people that do not know how to protect themselves form the sun, and tens of millions that are not waterproof, cannot swim, or would not retreat from slow rising water. It just seems to me that these analogies that millions will suffer from run-away trains (or whatever reason), if they are too stupid to get out of the way; is just plain exaggerating propaganda for a specific agenda. By the way, this report has been released just prior to a big UN Climate Change Meeting (Pep Rally); "yeah, we are saving the planet, so give us more money".

Most people in the world lack the resources to relocate their home from the neighborhood where they were born. Land that will not flood is going to demand a premium price, either in money or in blood. The US military has prepared plans for the wars that are likely to result from global warming caused dislocation of people.

Russia operates under the same Montreal Protocol rules as the USA. China and India were exempt as "developing countries," but both stopped CFC production and use in new products by 2010.

LOL!! hey, I dont take anything here as being antagonistic. We are not adolescents, and can respect each fellow member's perspectives. I consider members here as all ac forum web "buddies", for the record. But, just feedback to your perspective, hecat, NO, we shouldnt expect about 2 million people to know how to protect themselves from the sun- we have way more than that- despite all the pervasive info available about the dangers of too much uv radiation from the sun, including the examples of all the dumb a++ college students on Daytona every spring break lying in the sun all day long, to get a "healthy" tan. Those circles of people will never get it. Oh, college students arent the only dumb a++es, many adults are as well (I know some).

As far as the people simply getting to "higher ground" to avoid higher waters, where will the 100+++ million people of Bangladesh move to?? They will "swamp" the surrounding communities. Thats just one region in the world. There are many more.

I do agree with your perspective though, regarding the $$ that is to be made from some agendas. Still, $$ is many times a motivating factor for even positive endevours. You just have to present it in such a way.

Mark Twain said "we are all hypocrites". The power/truth of his statement is recognised because he would include himself in that critisism.
