AC worked fine last weekend, so well that my wife commented about that fact. ( JINX )
2 days later she said car was making a knocking noise from engine and was afraid to drive it till I checked it out.
When I started it (with the hood open) a loud continuous clicking was obviously coming from the AC Compressor/Clutch.
I looked inside the car , saw the AC was on , and turned it off. The clicking stopped. It returns when AC is turned back on.
Seems like clicks once per clutch revolution and increases w/engine rpm's.
I "think" the sound is coming from the clutch. The AC still seems to function well, gets nice and cold, but the loud clicking is both discerning, and embarrassing.
Any ideas ??? Is this the "kiss of death" for my compressor, or can I just replace the clutch front plate ???
With ignition switch on, engine off, pressing ac button on/off produces no audible clicking sounds.
Does that mean a bad coil or should I take a shim out ???
Any suggestions or next steps to take for trouble shooting this issue would be much appreciated.
I'm an avid DIY, but have never worked on ac systems.
Please help.
