Here come the Ford 500's.

Just a heads up. I'm getting these in my shop by the dozen it seems. Complaint is that the AC gets warm @idle. Condensor fan working fine, condensor is clean, charge is correct.

High side pressure a little low, but the low side is 70 or so @idle. Revving it up to 2000 rpm or so brings the high side up and the low side down and the AC works fine.

I don't know if this is a variable compressor with a bad valve in it or just a bad compressor.

I replaced 3 last week and the new compressors work fine @ idle.

Could be low on charge. Variable scroll system.

The 500 shared parts with the Freestyle. Since the last 500 was 2007, I would say they are all getting older about the same time now.

Might want to review this thread where we worked through a freestyle with 70 psi @ idle low side pressures...

The ones I'm seeing have working fans and a full charge. May have a valve in the compressor that acts funky or just bad compressors. Replacing the compressor, dryer and condensor brings the pressures back to where they should be.

Had a freestyle on thursday with the same problem.

A bad control valve can cause the same thing.

As the available fleet of those vehicles crosses 5+ years in age you will begin to see more tired compressors. Some owners had control valve issues 3+ years ago, and some have been changed. There were some people advocating a shim in the bad valve to fix the output @ 100% - a bad plan for sure.

Just be aware that once you correct a weak compressor / bad control valve you may see the high side jump up like the OP in that thread did. Even though the fans were "running" and it did not post a code - they still showed an out of range feedback speed.

If you think that system is complicated, just wait for the variable speed, PCM controlled electric water pumps in some of the new cars to start acting like that. This will be fun to watch.
